A bit of a disappointment
Sorry, but after reading the last review, I thought I'd try Norm's, and I probably won't bother to try it again. The area of the city looked a little run down - lots of closed shops and businesses. Once I got there, I was surprised to find the place as small as it was, and I asked to sit at the bar (8pm on Monday evening). The whole place was dim, and I sat at a dark end of the bar where I was largely ignred by the bartender. I finally got a drink and had to discover that the menu, utensils, and condiments were in a metal stand on the bar. I had the fish & chips (which was OK) and two drinks - one was "normal" and the next was "knock my socks off" stong. The clientel appeared to be mostly straight, and I sat next to a loving, cooing, straight couple that turned me off... Too dark, too long to get served, and not worth it if you ask me.
An unexpected treasure.
Norms is the heart and soul of alternative Portland. It feeds the most diverse of Portland's community in the most welcoming atmosphere imaginable, all while keeping prices reasonable and the drinks powerful. It does not matter if you are a local or visitor, gay, straight or undecided for the evening, Norms is an absolute must, as important to understanding the true character of Portland as a visit to the Old Port.
