STYXX (Closed Permanently) Formerly: The Underground

(28 Ratings)
Think your parent's basement rec room: TV, pool table, and faint odor of mildew
Portland's only real gay dance club, STYXX does a good job at mixing things up with everything from strippers to drag to karaoke to high energy dance. The two room club is busiest on weekends, especially on Fridays when the back room becomes "The Hidden Door" -- though don't expect anything extra besides a cover charge. Every small city with grit has one of these: a gay club where the young guys come to drink and dance, and the dowager queens melt into their bar stools while ogling the upstarts. Not to be missed.

A dying breed yet loved.

You will not spend much time at Styxx before you realize it to be much more then a simple drinking establishment to the locals who keep it entertaining. In a city teeming with opportunities for people living alternative lifestyles Styxx survives due to a committed clientele, who often participate in producing their own theme evenings. This bar/danceclub/lounge/clubhouse truly resonates with a younger local crowd finding their first sense of safety in a gay nightlife experience. You need not travel far from the city of Portland to understand the palpable oppression a young gay person in Maine likely experiences. Styxx is a refuge from that reality. The souls who grace the stage, tend the bar, fill the seats and dance on the 2 floors acknowledge bigger clubs, bigger cities and other opportunities, but Portland Maine is their home. Tonight they are going to make the best of their gay bar.

Decent place

The space has been expanded now, so there is an additional dance floor and bar, every time I have been there has always been many more woman then men there. Drinks are good, not much seating.
